Exploring the Impact of Support Systems on the Experiences of Self-Identified Women of Color from Counselor Education and Supervision Programs
Jill A. Ballesteros-Bowman
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
This dissertation explored the experiences of doctoral candidates, students, and recent graduates who self-identify as Women of Color (WOC) from Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) doctoral programs. This group included women who self-identified as members of racial, ethnic, or minority groups such as African American, Asian American, Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), Latina, or Native American ancestry, as well as multiracial and multiethnic students (Remaker et al., 2021). For this dissertation, this group did not include women who self-identified as Caucasian or White. This study highlighted the significance of support networks during key transitional periods, including the All but Dissertation (ABD) phase, currently writing a dissertation, and the experiences of recent graduates who completed their degrees within the last year (2023-2024). Participants shared their personal experiences regarding the impact of these support systems, including mentorship resources, which were instrumental in their success within the CES program and in their professional endeavors. This study used the theoretical framework of Schlossberg's transition theory to investigate how different factors, such as support systems and mentorship, impact the transitional experiences of these individuals. Support systems and mentorship tools include Individualized Development Plans (IDPs) and opportunities for co-planning and co-facilitating CES programs. The results of this hermeneutic phenomenological study offer valuable insights into the impact of support systems, including mentorship, for WOC from CES doctoral programs. This information can help address knowledge gaps and support research findings to share the impact of support networks, including mentorship for WOC from CES programs.
