Antwone Cameron
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Kentucky University
This qualitative study explored the impact of food insecurity on college students' academic performance and sense of belonging at a Midwestern university. Utilizing action research and a phenomenological design, the study gathered in-depth data through focus group discussions with students who experienced food insecurity. Key themes emerged, revealing that pride often deterred students from seeking help, hunger negatively impacted academic performance, and food insecurity diminished students' sense of belonging on campus. The findings underscored the complex challenges faced by food-insecure students and highlighted the need for comprehensive support systems, including better access to food resources and integration with financial aid. The study informs policymakers, higher education professionals, and institutions on designing targeted interventions to improve food security, thereby enhancing academic success and fostering a more inclusive campus environment. This research contributes valuable insights into addressing the pervasive issue of food insecurity in higher education.
