A Comparative Study of Perceived Stress Levels of Single District Superintendents and Shared Superintendents in New Jersey
Zachary Palombo
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of Idaho
The superintendency can be stressful, and increasingly some individuals are superintendents for more than one district. This mixed methods study focuses on the shared superintendency and stress drawing on a combination of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and follow up interviews. While no statistically significant difference between single district and shared superintendents was found, concerns worth considering were surfaced as more than half of the superintendents who were respondents in the state of New Jersey (32 of 61, or 52.5%) had either moderate or high stress levels at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 school year and participants descriptions indicate several areas for future consideration.
