Examining Secondary School Counselors' Experiences When Working with Students with Problematic Internet Behaviors

As internet use continues to rise, school counselors encounter challenges related to problematic internet behaviors among secondary students. This qualitative study examines the experiences of Georgia school counselors when working to prevent, manage, and support these behaviors. I used a semi-structured format to interview 15 school counselors in Georgia public schools across several diverse secondary settings. Using qualitative content analysis, my findings revealed that while counselors recognized the importance of addressing problematic internet behaviors, the lack of targeted professional development in areas such as internet addiction, pornography, and cyberbullying left counselors feeling inadequately prepared when working with students facing these issues. The study highlights the prevalence of internet-related challenges that Georgia school counselors face, as well as the proposed guidance from Georgia Senate Bill 351 that will require the implementation of an internet safety curriculum in Georgia public schools. Recommendations include systemic professional learning for widely observed problematic behaviors that underscore the urgency for the evolving needs of this tech-savvy generation.
