The Impact of Practice in Training
Tino Simon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, North Dakota State University
This study was conducted for an audience of managers in business and industry training organizations and aimed to find the correlation between hands-on practice in training and trainees' post-training performance in an effort to help determine how much hands-on practice should be included in new-hire training to result in optimal post-training performance for each trainee. Having this guidance was intended to help improve future versions of the training and assist management with planning and funding decisions. While the new-hire training program was found to be consistent with the approximate practice in training guidelines of the ROPES training model and consistently met its goal of producing trainees with a good level of proficiency, the data available for this research was not sufficient to reveal the specific impact of hands-on practice on the trainee's post-training performance. Recommendations for future evaluations include continuing research into the impact of training, gathering more data to support such research, increasing the survey return percentage, evaluating other factors that may impact post-training performance, and evaluating what factors impact how much hands-on practice an individual trainee needs to attain optimal proficiency in the allotted training time.
