A Quantitative Analysis of Gender Equity and Institutional Prestige in Senior Faculty Positions at Doctoral-Degree Granting Institutions

Women are over-represented in some sectors of higher education and underrepresented at doctoral institutions, particularly at the highest professor rank and at institutions with high prestige (Carr, 2021, Blackmore, 2015; Brewer et al., 2002; West & Curtis, 2006). This study explored gender disparity in the context of societal and institutional influences, considering historical norms and the male-dominated prestige economy of academia. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between gender equity in senior faculty positions and prestige within U.S. doctoral degree granting institutions. Using data from the Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System (IPEDS), a cross-sectional dataset of Carnegie doctoral institutions for 2022 and 2013 was analyzed. Regression techniques were used to investigate connections between four dependent variables related to gender equity, seventeen independent variables which served as a proxy for prestige or represented institutional characteristics, and six control variables. The study resulted in two findings: first, the predictive power of an institution's Carnegie classification on gender equity among senior faculty ranks increased between 2013 and 2022, changing from not significant in 2013 to significant in 2022; and second, the percent of women enrolled at an institution had the greatest predictive power on gender equity amongst faculty positions.
