Confidence in Crisis: Identifying Key Predictors of Counselor Self-Efficacy in Suicide Crisis Situations

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
This research investigated the factors influencing counselor self-efficacy in performing suicide risk assessments, grounded in Bandura's self-efficacy models (1977). Utilizing a sample of 95 survey responses from practicing counselors, the research aimed to identify which variables significantly affect scores on the Counselor's Crisis Self-Efficacy Scale (Peters et al., 2017). Analysis revealed that significant correlations existed across three distinct variables: internship experiences working with suicidal clients, supervision-seeking behaviors during internship, and participation in continuing education on suicide intervention. This research illuminates how counselor self-efficacy development is a nuanced process and highlights areas for further investigation into the dynamics of professional development and crisis intervention.
