Rose Colored Glasses: Inequalities in Collegiate Athletics from the Female Student-Athlete Perspective: A Qualitative Study
Emmie Leigh Cass
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
As Title IX recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, there are still looming debates centered around compliance with federal policy, inequalities in collegiate athletics, and approaches to alleviate such issues at hand. While previous scholars have examined inequalities between men's and women's programs in collegiate athletics, few have asked female SAs to explain their perspectives on equality within the context of collegiate athletics. Utilizing a feminist theoretical framework, this research study provides a comprehensive introduction to the policy parameters of Title IX, includes an historical timeline of Title IX, examines current advantages that remain in men's programs over women's programs in collegiate athletics, and encapsulates gray areas of Title IX compliance. This qualitative study gathered and analyzed the perspectives of (in)equality from 15 SA female participants. Furthermore, this study explored if differences existed between the experience and perspective of (in)equality across same-sex programs (i.e., softball; basketball) and non-same-sex programs (i.e., track & field). The research was conducted across two National Collegiate Athletic Association levels (Division I and Division II). The findings from this study reveal that, from the perspective of SAs, there are significant inequalities within collegiate athletics that impact their overall experience. SAs often perceive a gap between the treatment of different sports, with high-revenue sports like football and basketball receiving more attention, while lower-revenue sports face underfunding and limited visibility. The discussion on these findings will aid SAs, scholars, athletic department administration, and policy stakeholders as continued efforts are made continue to examine and address the gendered inequalities that still remain in collegiate athletics.
