The Heart of the Community College Student: A Phenomenological Study of Student Decision-Making as It Relates to Passion and Major Selection
Sidney Alfonso Grimes Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern New Hampshire University
This study was conducted to investigate the decision-making process of students and their ability to connect passion when contemplating selection of a particular college major, and potential career. A phenomenological study approach was employed to obtain a better understanding of how student passion influences the decision-making process for students considering a college major or potential career after school. A phenomenological approach endeavors to comprehend individual's experiences by focusing on their recollections, emotions, thoughts, assessments, and decisions as they make sense of their experiences and the meaning, they associate with them (Creswell, 2007). While there has been a considerable amount of research conducted regarding factors that influence student's decisions about selecting a major and then a career, there remained a gap. Much of the literature has not focused on the student's passion, motivation, or feelings related to the decision-making process of the student when passion is considered as a factor that influences a student's decision when contemplating a college major, or possible career. Although quantitative data is essential, it is also important to engage the student in order to best understand the student's viewpoint, interests, and the motivation for their decisions. By way of interviews with the study participants, comparisons of their recorded accounts, shared perspectives, and lived experiences, the findings of the study provided valuable data that substantiates the hypothesis that passion influences the decision-making process for community college students when choosing a major. The findings of this study contribute to the body of current literature and begin to fill the gap on research conducted from the perspective of the community college student experience as it relates to student decision-making and student passion, and selecting a major of interest in pursuit towards individual success. These findings can and should increase the awareness of college presidents, administrators, enrollment directors, counselors, and faculty with a deeper understanding of their institution's student experience.
