The Student Lived Experience of Mentoring as It Relates to Spiritual Formation in an Ethnically Diverse Christian College Environment: A Phenomenological Study
David E. White II
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Johnson University
This research project was a phenomenological study seeking to uncover lived student experiences on mentoring with specific interest in student spiritual development at a diverse student community on a Christian college campus. Previous research on the topics of both mentoring and spiritual development of Christian college students have used relatively homogeneous student populations, which do not account for student diversity on modern college campuses. Therefore, it was the researcher's desire to uncover diverse student lived experiences with mentoring for spiritual formation. Specifically, the research question was: What is the student perspective of mentoring at Dallas Christian College as it relates to spiritual formation? The research question also sought to uncover patterns of meaning, significant key themes based upon race and gender, and themes beyond race and gender differences. Although there are differences in the experience of students, which can be linked to their racial and gender differences, this study found mentoring is based upon a strong relationship between mentor and mentee. The mentee must understand the mentor authentically cares about the mentee, whom the mentor travels with on life's journey. Therefore, mentoring across races and genders can be effective if there is a positive relationship between mentor and mentee. The results of this study demonstrated shared Christian faith enables students to overcome barriers. This study shows Christian colleges how to holistically mentor students who are racially diverse. Likewise, diverse faculty are also capable of holistically mentoring students across race and gender divides.
