Correlation between Admission Criteria and Completion of a Radiation Therapy Program
Delores Jewel Whiteing
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Capella University
Radiation therapy is a highly specialized profession that requires education and training of individuals to administer radiation to patients. There is increased pressure for faculty to select and retain students most likely to complete a program curriculum. The purpose of the quantitative correlational study was to examine whether a predictive correlation existed between applicant characteristics of grade point average, science grade point average, prior health care background experience, previous earned degree, and completion of a 2-year bachelor of science program in radiation therapy. A convenience sample of radiation therapy student records from the academic years of 2008-2016 produced the required dataset to conduct the statistical analysis. A logistic regression was used to access each predictor variable separately. A multivariate analysis with backwards elimination was conducted to assess which variables were significant for program completion. A key finding from the study was the statistical significance of age on program completion. After completing a backwards elimination model, age was included as a continuous variable to reflect its functional form. In summary, the model contained one variable that was significant, which was age. Future recommended research includes radiation therapy student selection practices from larger sample sizes. Findings of this study warrant investigation into how a student's prior personal experiences, academic background, perceptions of learning, and expectations regarding the college experience can influence the motivation to succeed.
