Andrea Catherine Hogan
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if and to what extent the four factors of technology readiness (optimism, innovativeness, insecurity or discomfort) predict the three elements of the Community of Inquiry (CoI); (social, cognitive, and teaching presence) in undergraduate online students. The community of inquiry theory and technology readiness theory comprised the theoretical framework in this study. Data collected were from a sample of 116 participants by combining the Community of Inquiry Survey and the Technology Readiness Index 2.0 into an online questionnaire. The study was guided by three research questions asking if there was a relationship between any of the four factors of technology readiness (optimism, innovativeness, insecurity, or discomfort) and social, cognitive and teaching presence. The results of the analysis conducted revealed a statistical significance that optimism positively correlated to social presence cognitive presence and teaching presence and innovativeness positively correlated to social presence. (RQ1, rs = 0.36 p = 0.001 and rs = 0.23 and p = 0.001, RQ 2, rs = 0.31 and p = 0.001 and RQ3, rs = 0.24 and p = 0.003). The finding of this study demonstrates the value optimism has in correlation to social, cognitive and teaching presence in undergraduate online students. This study affirms that the promoting elements of technology readiness (optimism and innovativeness) led to more positive online course experiences, with optimism being the biggest predictor.
