I Got a Lot to Be Mad About: Sista Circles as a Counterspace for Black Women Doctoral Students
Dajanae Palmer
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University
The study explores the experiences of Black women in doctoral education navigating gendered racial microaggressions and their capacity to generate knowledge in community with each other. Black women are graduating with doctorates from doctorate programs, but they are having negative and inequitable experiences and this study uncovers how they persist despite the challenges. The study centered Black women and worked to uplift their voices in the literature of the graduate student experience. While highlighting the experiences of Black women doctoral students the study provided space and support through a sista circle. Sista circles are a culturally congruent qualitative methodology with the following tenets: communication dynamics, centrality of empowerment, and researcher as sista scholar (Johnson, 2015). The research questions that guide the study are: (1) How do sista circles operate? (2) What knowledge is generated within sista circles? (3) How are Black women doctoral students applying the knowledge generated from sista circles to navigate their encounters with gendered and racial microaggressions? The findings of the study encompass the interactions between the sista scholars, how we interacted, the knowledge we shared, and how we applied the wisdom. The counterspace themes were not a counterstory: normalized experiences existing as Black women, developing community through our Black womaness, the unfiltered realities of academia, and navigating the impact from the disruption of whiteness. Additionally, our collective knowledge shared in the group presented itself in our community knowledge and support and our ability to remove the veil of whiteness from our sista circle space. Lastly, I presented how we applied the knowledge and wisdom in our lives beyond this study. I discussed my methodological contribution to sista circle with the addition of sista circle methodology. Implications for academia are given focused on how to improve conditions for Black women doctoral students.
