Sleep Behaviors and Sleep Hygiene Education in Suburban Middle School Students
Michael David Schaefer
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This study explored the issues surrounding adolescent sleep (middle school students in grades 7-8) in a suburban school district in Columbus, Ohio. This study assessed the effects of a KidsHealth.org sleep education program through middle school physical education class to potentially improve daytime sleepiness as measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale--Child Adolescent (ESS-CHAD). Five lessons were delivered to the treatment classes during their regularly scheduled class times over five weeks (one class per week). The treatment was intended to increase knowledge about sleep and help middle school students develop and discover benefits of practicing healthy sleep practices. The overall average ESS-CHAD sleepiness score from the pre-test survey was 7.60, which falls into the ESS-CHAD scoring range of 6-10. According to Johns (2017), scores in this range exhibit a higher-than-normal daytime sleepiness. Participants in the treatment group had a post-test mean difference of 2.18 compared to participants in the control group. The p-value was less than 0.001. This shows that the curriculum was effective in lowering participants' ESS-CHAD sleepiness scores. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
