Marshella Lie
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the career pathways by 14 female Asian academic administrators in New York, their leadership experiences, and the barriers they encountered along the way and strategies used to overcome them. The researcher relied on the theoretical foundations critical theory and intersectionality as lenses for understanding the experiences of female administrators in New York. The research questions were: What were the career pathways taken by Asian women who attained positions as academic administrators in the state of New York? How do female Asian academic administrators perceive their leadership experiences in achieving senior-level positions in higher education? How do female Asian academic administrators perceive their strategies to overcome barriers in achieving senior-level positions in higher education? The target population was Asian women serving as academic administrators in the state of New York. Multiple data sources included resumes, interviews, and open-ended questionnaires. Findings from this study revealed the participants' career pathways and their willingness to step out of their comfort zone and make an impact; the barriers including cultural barriers, not being taken seriously, being invisible; and the strategies used to overcome those challenges, including mentoring and networking. Results from this study may be used to inform women's decision-making process in choosing a career and help them identify and apply effective strategies for countering the barriers they may face during the pursuit of leadership positions.
