ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Missouri - Saint Louis
The purpose of this study is to explore the self-directed learning behaviors of adult users of the social media vehicle, Twitter, through the lens of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States during the second wave, spring and summer of 2020. The objective of the study is to identify Twitter behavior and usage patterns to assist in determining adults' awareness and use of media literacy and critical media literacy skills used with the social media content they consume. Two focus groups and six individual interviews informed this study. These group and individual interviews also included analysis of Twitter posts. The findings/results of this study will assist educators with assessing the gaps in media literacy and critical media literacy skills of adults with social media and determine the educational focus needed to improve awareness of the content and context of social media messages. This study was based on a qualitative research design using a constructivist approach. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
