Involving Young People as Peer Researchers in Research on Community Relations in Northern Ireland. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Dirk Schubotz
Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study focuses on a mixed-methods participatory project undertaken with young people in Northern Ireland. The project consisted of two main parts: (a) the 2010 Young Life and Times survey of 16-year olds and (b) a participatory follow-up project in which some of the Young Life and Times survey respondents were recruited as peer researchers to help explore young people's attitudes to, and experiences of, community relations in Northern Ireland further. The project was undertaken because a lot was known about the positive effects that compulsory school-based cross-community projects had on the relations between young Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland; however, there was a knowledge gap about the effects of similar voluntary projects that take place outside of, or in addition to, mainstream schooling. This case study addresses some of the benefits and challenges of working with young people as peer researchers and outlines the process which we followed in this project.
