Managing Stress through Meditation? Design and Development Professional Development Case Study of Teachers and Counselors

Stress and burnout can affect an individual's life in physiological and psychological ways. The problem addressed in this study was the excessive amount of stress counselors and teachers experience and the lack of available professional training and training in practices such as mindfulness. The purpose of this study was to design and conduct a professional development program to educate and train teachers and counselors on the benefits of mindfulness meditation practices using concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation to reduce stress and prevent burnout. The guiding theoretical framework consisted of the transactional model of stress and coping combined with Lazarus's stress model, Selye's theory of physiological response, and Tarrasch's work on mindfulness meditation. Three research questions guided this qualitative case study approach that allowed the analysis of the participants' responses who contributed to this study. Personalized journals and the Kirkpatrick learning and reaction surveys were used to collect perceptions and information from the teacher and counselor participants. NVivo software was used to categorize themes and to organize the results, which showed attending the training was beneficial to teachers' and counselors' stress reduction as they felt less anxiety, experienced fewer depressive symptoms and became calmer and more attentive to their thoughts and feelings. Recommendations for practice are to provide mindfulness training to teach positive stress management techniques, prevent burnout, and create awareness of mindfulness practices. Recommendations for future research are to conduct the training in other educational settings and to use a larger sample size. The conclusions drawn from the study are that the negative symptoms that arise from stress affect teachers' work environment as well as their personal lives, and mindfulness meditative practices can reduce that stress and yield positive outcomes.
