In the Deep End: Professional Development Needs for Technical College Faculty in Kansas
Charles I. Havens
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Kansas
The job expectations of career and technical educators requires a unique blend of industry experience and educational experience. Often this blend is difficult to find. In order to fill positions, career and technical education (CTE) institutions often hire personnel directly from industry with little to no educational experience. Therefore, CTE institutions must then rely on professional development offerings to train CTE instructors. This quantitative descriptive research project examined the professional development offered at CTE institutions in Kansas. The first few aspects examined were frequency and effectiveness of professional development for full-time post-secondary CTE instructors at CTE institution in Kansas. The study found CTE institutions are providing effective professional development offerings continuously. It was also found that CTE institutions in Kansas are not providing high-quality mentorships to their faculty members. Another aspect that was researched was the perceived essential professional development needs of first-year CTE instructors. It was found that pedagogy and policies and procedures are the largest perceived need for first-year instructors. The final component examined was if there is a relationship between overall professional development satisfaction and intent to remain. It was found that there was a strong correlation between these two factors. It is recommended that CTE institutions continue to offer continuous high-quality professional development. Another recommendation is the development of a new CTE instructor induction program that focuses on pedagogy, policy, and procedures. It is also recommended for CTE institutions to strive to increase overall professional development satisfaction, which could result in increased faculty retention. Finally, it is recommended that CTE institutions should examine their current mentorship program and overhaul any deficiencies.
