Research Design and Research Reality: Child-Led Photography and Ethnography in Early Childhood Research. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Cara Blaisdell
Sage Research Methods Cases
In this case study, I discuss my experiences doing empirical research with young children. Rather than present the results of this project, I focus on the process of actually doing the research. I planned to use child-led photography as a stand-alone, structured 'participatory' research method. However, upon entering the field, it became clear that this design did not suit the practices of the fieldwork site, and I made significant adaptations, ultimately incorporating unstructured child-led photography into a broader, ethnographic approach. This experience raised many questions for me about research design and practice; in this case study, I discuss the implications for inclusion that a rigid approach to research might create.
