The Impact of an Executive Function Intervention on Fifth-Grade Students

Learning how to organize information, prioritize tasks, adjust to changing demands and reflect on their learning requires students to use executive function (EF) skills. Research shows that EF processes are essential to learning and can impact academic performance. Students who are not given adequate practice with EF skills may struggle with academic challenges in the classroom. Five EF processes that are known to affect learning were reviewed in this study: goal setting, cognitive flexibility, organizing and prioritizing, accessing working memory, and self-monitoring. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how an EF intervention impacted teachers' and students' perceptions of student learning as well as students' motivation, effort, and EF strategy use. The data collection and analysis included teachers' pre- and post-intervention interviews, classroom observations, student worksheets and pre- and post-surveys completed by four fifth-grade teachers and 77 fifth-grade students. Findings revealed three themes. The first theme was teachers' and students' understanding of EF. Before the intervention, teachers' and students' understanding of EF was limited. After the intervention, they could articulate what EF was and how it impacted learning. The second theme was students' motivation and effort. Both teachers and students thought students' motivation and effort was an area of strength before and after the intervention. The third theme was students' use of EF strategies. Teachers' and students' perceptions of students' use of EF strategies increased after the intervention. Analysis of the findings provided useful information that may encourage teachers to provide direct EF instruction in their classrooms.
