Kristin Murphy; Elizabeth MacDonald
Sage Research Methods Cases
Photovoice is a participatory action research approach that integrates photography and critical discussion to examine issues from the perspective of co-researchers with the goal of promoting change at the personal and community level and to promote a sense of empowerment. This case study is based on a senior thesis research project that took place during the Spring and Fall 2020 semesters in a US higher education institution during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to public health conditions, the focus and methods for the project had to shift and were revised to be completed entirely via remote methods. This case study will lay out step-by-step procedures for photovoice research conceptualization, implementation, analysis, and implementation, with particular attention paid to considerations and reflections on the remote experience.
