A Non-Standard Methodology: Listening to Published Narratives on the Canadian Arctic. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Heather Moquin
Sage Research Methods Cases
My doctoral studies focused upon research, colonization, and pedagogy within the Canadian Arctic. I utilized a literary approach to listen to published writings on my chosen topic of research. Reading and writing were my main methods which I theorized according to a respectful approach as a non-Inuk ("Inuk" is the singular noun for "Inuit") studying issues relevant to Inuit. This methodological approach was considered non-standard because I used literary methods, atypical within the social sciences, and because I did not follow prescribed research methodologies to arrive at a final text. My process involved reading texts authored by Inuit and non-Inuit on the themes of research, colonization, and pedagogy as relevant to the Canadian Arctic and, then, writing the thesis text as a conversation between these diverse narratives. Following this atypical methodology was important for this research because it accommodated my ethical concerns and because it opened up an examination of how meaning-making in research occurs through reading and writing. The methodology also allowed for a consideration of ideal pedagogies for dialogue across difference and, therefore, the text was also performative as I portrayed my understandings of dialogue and learning within research through writing the text in such a manner.
