The Experience of Practicing Mindfulness Meditation among Women Graduate Psychology Students
Terry Badey-McClelland
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
There is a growing need for research exploring mindfulness meditation experiences among women graduate psychology students. While there are many techniques available for managing stress, mindfulness meditation is explored in this study as one such technique. This study sought to fill the literature gap by examining the experience of women psychology graduate students who practice mindfulness meditation. In conjunction with a generic qualitative inquiry using thematic analysis, eight women graduate psychology students self-report as regular mindfulness meditation practitioners for at least one year, at least three times weekly; for at least 20 minutes per session, participants shared their experiences of practicing mindfulness meditation. Open-ended interviews were conducted to obtain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of the participants. The practice of mindfulness meditation appeared to have had a substantial beneficial physical and psychological effect on the participants. The themes that emerged from the data analysis supported theories of feminist theory, stress and coping theory, self-determination theory, and mindfulness theory. It is hoped that this study will enhance future studies by sampling participants based on the practice of mindfulness inventories deepening the understanding of mindfulness meditation practice related to formative experiences, connections with others during meditation practice, and academic modifications associated with mindfulness.
