Academic and Behavioral Outcomes of Expelled Students after Their Return to the Regular School Setting
Roderick Ramon Henderson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Mississippi College
The purpose of this study was to investigate the academic and behavioral outcomes of expelled students after their return to the regular school setting. The premise of this study is based on the assumption that time lost to out of school suspensions and expulsions lead to a negative impact on the academic success of students in the areas of academic achievement and attendance. This quantitative study relied upon attendance and state testing data (Mississippi Academic Assessment Program) in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics. The data was collected from 5 school districts located in southwest Mississippi and included over 50 middle school students ranging from grades 6th through 8th between the years of 2016 to 2019. This study used ANOVA, Turkey's Homogenous Subsets, and independent sample t-tests to determine the statistical significance of the hypothesized relationship at p<0.05. As a result, it was found that 3 of the 4 null hypotheses were retained, with no statistical difference being found between student absentees and ELA test results over a three-year period.
