Zhonghuang Li
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Pepperdine University
An increasing number of international students are choosing to study abroad in the United States, the experiences of cross-cultural learning have become a crucial factor that both students and educators must take into consideration. During the period of intercultural education, Chinese high school international students are inevitably exposed to challenges and obstacles when they face the cultural shock of entering a Western country. The challenges and obstacles are dramatically impacting the ways these students adopt knowledge, make new friends with others, and navigate their psychological states towards negative energy. Therefore, the study used a qualitative descriptive methodology to purposefully explore and understand the root cause of the existing challenges, specifically, the study aimed former Chinese high school international students. By collecting data from students' true voice via semi-structured interviews, the researcher completed semi-structured interviews with 26 open-ended questions. This study was guided by the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity (DMIS) theoretical framework to authenticate the findings. Accordingly, various thematic gaps have been identified through the analysis of student's responses, (a) Adaptation of new cultural understanding, (b) To cope with new environments factors, (c) Academic and social challenges, (d) Lack of local support system. The result has measured that more than 70% of former Chinese high school international students encountered the difficulties described above. Several recommendations were advocated for both school and students. Such as incorporate discussion topics that related to raising cultural awareness and embracing cultural differences; Provide an English-speaking environment for foreign students in the United States high school; Encouraging students to actively participant in school activities and so forth.
