A Case Study of Innovation in a Special Education School
Nancy Morris
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Gannon University
This qualitative case study explores how innovation is practiced within a PK-12 special education school. Data was collected through nine semi-structured interviews of school personnel, analysis of data from the school's website, anecdotal notes and documents from meeting attendance and observations, and photographs of the school site. Several antecedents and outcomes of innovation emerged from the data in this research study. A shared vision of innovation, teacher and staff passion and commitment to their jobs, and the diverse environment were all predictors of innovative practices. Outcomes of innovations at the school included a change in mindset and perspective regarding innovation and influences on the rate of innovation adoption by individuals. Transformational and servant leadership were found to support innovative practices. Implications for educational practice are discussed in the conclusion.
