Predicting Teacher Attrition Using the School and Staffing Survey (SASS): A Logistic Regression Exploration
Timothy J. Hilton
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Claremont Graduate University
Teacher attrition is a topic that while researched in abundance, still plagues our education system. Research has shown that between 40% and 50% of all teachers leave the profession within five years of entering the profession. This is not sustainable. In addition, scholars offer various suggestions about why teachers are leaving the profession. Some studies suggest salary as the key factor driving teachers from the profession while others suggest that school and job-related stress is driving teachers out of the classroom. Utilizing the 20122-2012 SASS (School and Staffing Survey) data, as well as the 2012-2013 TFS (Teacher Follow-up Survey) data, this study sought to explore which SASS variables could predict teacher attrition in the following year. By merging the three data sets (SASS, TFS Current Teacher, and TFS Former Teacher) the author was able to determine which teachers stayed/left the profession following their initial SASS responses by matching each response with the Teacher Control Number. This study found that school culture, as well as student characteristics, had the greatest predictive properties. Specifically, this study found that; principal vision, teachers enforcing rules, student absenteeism, and student apathy all could predict teacher attrition to a degree. Issues such as satisfaction with salary and availability of resources did not return any statistically significant results.
