ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The value of knowledge management and the role it plays is increasingly being acknowledged by higher education, ensuring a cohesive approach to identifying, capturing, evaluating, retrieving, and sharing an institution's informational assets. The problem addressed by this case study was that many higher education institutions face challenges concerning how to develop and encourage knowledge management as a means of promoting an operative practice to increase efficiencies, effectiveness, and increase competitive advantage in a knowledge-based economy. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify knowledge management enablers used to implement and improve the knowledge-sharing operative process by examining the factors that influence the knowledge management practices of higher education. Using a qualitative method and a case study design, strategies, enablers, process capability, performance, and organizational characteristics were examined to identify effective factors implemented to improve knowledge sharing. Fourteen universities and colleges were evaluated using publicly available information and documentation such as reports, records, policies, repositories, and programming. The themes included a) barriers and lack of reporting, b) transparency and gaps in knowledge management, c) strategies that support knowledge sharing in higher education, d) the challenge of knowledge sharing in higher education, e) strategies to support tacit and explicit knowledge in higher education, and f) strategies to support tacit and explicit knowledge of higher education. Results presented a lack of reporting information in higher education could present a barrier to knowledge management. Findings from this study support how knowledge management factors affect the organizational culture, innovation, and growth of higher education.
