Perceptions of School Safety
Johannah Hill Peay
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, University of Colorado at Denver
The implications of school safety are an important topic within our educational system. Research debates the effect that School Resource Officers have on the perception of safety within the school system. This study was conducted to examine the perception of school safety for ethnically/minoritized students and whether or not that perception is affected by the presence of a school resource officer. In an effort to identify a relationship between the perception of school safety and the presence of a School Resource Officer, data was examined from the Whole Child Survey distributed by a large urban district and analyzed with the number and percentage of ethnically minoritized students, whether the students were in Elementary, Middle or High School and the presence of a school resource officer full time or part-time or not at all. There were no significant relationships found between the perception of school safety data and whether or not a School Resource Officer was present. A negative correlation was found between perception of safety and the number and percentage of ethnically/minoritized students. A positive correlation was found between the level of education, Elementary, Middle or High School, and the perception of school safety. Implications for practice and policy are discussed.
