Teacher Retention: Reasons Teachers Stay with the Same School beyond Five Years
Danielle N. Knox
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
The reasons teachers leave the profession within the first five years is thoroughly explored on a yearly basis. Even though teachers who are transferred to another school or resign from their position complete an exit interview before leaving their current position, the reasons teachers give for leaving may not provide the specific details of their departure. Since the 2017 school year, the Independent School District has had a higher turnover rate (19.1%) than the state of Texas (16.6%) (SY 2017-2021 Campus Improvement Plan). While the responsibility of the principal is seen as an essential aspect in teacher retention, a limited number of research studies examine the reasons for teachers remaining at their current school, especially beyond five years. By utilizing email responses and social distancing face-to-face interviews from 12 teachers, the research pinpoints the reasons from a portion of the professional staff of a middle school, a secondary school in an independent school district, why they have stayed at the school for more than five years. The study uses a qualitative method approach. The researcher identifies the following reasons why teachers remain at a school for at least five years: (1) their given autonomy, (2) they're trusted to do their job, (3) they feel supported, and (4) for the competitive salary. The findings that occurred from the data disclosed similar reasons the participating teachers stayed in the school beyond five years.
