Relationships between Resilience, Religious Coping, and Anxiety and Depression in University Students
Olivia Painter
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Biola University
Limited research has been completed in the area of resilience and its relationships with religious coping, anxiety, and depression in the university setting. Existent studies have found positive relationships between resilience and religious coping as well as a between religious coping and mental health. However, studies have not examined resilience as a mediator of the relationship between religious coping and mental health. In addition, the specific dimensions of resilience that may be associated with lower levels of anxious and depressive symptoms have not been explored. This study assessed 273 university students to further examine the relationships between these constructs. Consistent with hypotheses, students with higher levels of positive religious coping reported less anxiety and depression; those using more negative religious coping reported worse mental health. Resilience was found to mediate the relationships between positive and negative religious coping and anxiety and depression. Of the five resilience factors, control was the most significant predictor of mental health. Those students with low levels of positive religious coping combined with any negative religious coping demonstrated the poorest mental health. In terms of the mental health of university students, findings suggest that efforts to enhance resilience and positive religious coping should be supported while interventions to address negative religious coping are needed.
