The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify training gaps for Teacher Aides within an after-school prevention program in north central Florida. The program focuses on prevention of high-risk behavior in at-risk youth and is further restricted by socioeconomic, geographical, and parental support factors. Virtual interviews and surveys were conducted with certified teachers that participate in the after-school prevention program to solicit their perception of training gaps that teacher aides face, and their opinion on how those gaps could be overcome. The findings indicated that there is a significant gap in the training needed by teacher aides and that the gaps were further widened when factoring in the type of program and targeted student population (at-risk). Based on the interview responses, a guide was created to help administrators of these programs develop training programs for their teacher aides. Additionally, the findings of this research could help lead to standardized training requirements for teacher aides similar to those of certified teachers. Because state teacher certification requirements vary dramatically, the guide focuses on training necessary skills rather than policy issues.
