The Visibility and Accessibility of Support Services for Older Adult Learners
Wilma Helena Yeargin
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D./HE Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
The current and projected influx of older adult learners over 50 years of age implies the need to revisit lenses in which they are perceived and their academic needs. Though there are several support services to assist with physiological, socioeconomical, emotional, and cognitive hindrances, accessibility to these services continues to be the greatest obstacle for this population. This qualitative action research reviewed need, accessibility, and navigational ease of support services for older adult students currently attending or reentering higher education environments. The five major findings on the sources of accessing support services involved faculty, internet, paper and published literature, person-to-person assistance, and propensity to share with others. A college reentry preparatory transitional program was designed to provide a navigational system to enhance the availability of services for this target population.
