Garnering Respect Starts from Within: Supporting Leaders in Early Childhood Education
Emily Lian
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The lack of industry guidance within early childhood education (ECE) regarding roles and prescribed responsibilities leave privately owned centers to make such decisions independently, especially in the United States. Education Directors (EDs) at Prism Preschool, a young and growing franchise in Texas, are tasked with overseeing curriculum implementation at their respective centers. Their roles were identified to be pivotal to the success of the organization, yet current practices surrounding onboarding and ongoing support revealed a need for systemic changes. Current EDs were interviewed in the first data collection, where they were asked to reflect and make suggestions for improving the ED experience for themselves and for future EDs. Then, they were invited to collaborate with the Systems curriculum team to put some of these ideas into action. This collective effort utilized an action research methodology that ultimately yielded significant improvements in training and supporting EDs at Prism Preschool while opening the door for continuous improvements to be made as the franchise continues to grow. The findings of this study can be applied to other leadership roles within the organization as well as similarly structured preschool franchises.
