Storytelling as a Path to Belonging: Undergraduate Women of Color Creating Bridges from Barriers
Michelle Luff Brisson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Sense of belonging as experienced by college students has contributed to high rates of co-curricular engagement and lifelong connections to an institution long beyond one's years as an undergraduate student. Undergraduate Students of Color and other historically minoritized student populations have reported barriers to their sense of belonging. This research project was designed to examine the experiences of undergraduate Women of Color, in order to learn about the bridges and barriers to belonging in co-curricular settings at one small, private, liberal arts university. In the first segment of this research project, seven undergraduate Women of Color including three international students, participated in interviews to explore each participant's sense of belonging and how engagement in co-curricular life impacted their belonging. The next segment of this research project was a series of workshops on storytelling for social change, hosted for eight undergraduate Women of Color including two international students. In the final segment of this research project, five undergraduate Women of Color including two international students, facilitated a "Women of Color Meet-Up" program for new first year undergraduate Women of Color. This program was hosted as an effort to create a bridge to belonging and disrupt a common barrier to belonging as identified by participants. The findings from this project inform future organizational change efforts to build intentionally inclusive communities for undergraduate Women of Color in higher education.
