The Life History Approach in Gender Studies: Exploring the Experience of Saudi Women Academics. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Rafif Abdulaziz D. Hakiem
Sage Research Methods Cases
In this case study, I discuss my use of the life history approach to investigate the experience of women academics in Saudi Arabia's higher education system. I introduce the elements of the life history approach and argue for its value for empowering women. I start by explaining the steps I followed in applying this approach to my inquiry. I depict the conceptual and methodological underpinnings of life history narratives and how they can be used to explore marginalized voices. An integral part of the life history method is to promote the active involvement of participants as co-researchers, sensitively exploring co-constructed narratives of experience and identity through conversations and interactions. It is a way of understanding experiences and of embracing research participants' opinions through meaning-making. As my own research is concerned with the dominant ideologies of patriarchy in family and educational institutions, this case discusses the use of visual non-linguistic methods within the life history approach as an alternative means of expression. My contribution provides practical advice for adopting the life history approach in different contexts. [This content is provided in the format of an e-book.]
