Sage Research Methods Cases
In 2011, I began the thesis research for my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and I was looking to conduct a study that focused on adolescent girls, particularly one that would enable me to engage with participants on a personal level. One of my thesis supervisors brought a group to my attention that had a particularly strong impact on the participants. The group was started in a high school in British Columbia, Canada, and it was a grassroots, school-based suicide prevention group. This group, called the Alive group, included high school students between 15 and 18 years of age. It was a support group for the students, and they also created and performed presentations on suicide prevention to peers and students at other schools. This case explores how I used the qualitative method of the Listening Guide to explore the experiences of the students in the Alive group. I will also discuss my experience of implementing a depth-oriented method and the richness and personal growth that can result for the researchers.
