Understanding the Exploration of Leadership in Subject Teams: A Mixed-Methods Approach. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Manuj Kumar Gokul
Sage Research Methods Cases
In 2007, I embarked on what turned out to be a 6-year-long PhD study that examined the leadership of teaching and learning through advice and information in school subject teams. Previous research had focused predominantly on formally designated leaders and their interactions with followers in informal contexts. My study focused on both formal and informal teacher leaders, and their interactions in both the formal context of team meetings and their informal interactions outside of team meetings. This research project case provides an account of the study from the conceptual stage to its conclusion, highlighting the method of undertaking research using a mixed-methods approach, the challenges in employing distinctively different methods of Organisational Network Analysis and Conversation Analysis to a study and the complexities involved in undertaking research as an 'insider researcher'.
