Barriers to Women's Leadership Positions in Higher Education in Saudi Arabia
Hadel G. Alenezi
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Widener University
In recent years, women have been gaining access to education and all fields of employment all around the world. In Saudi Arabia, women have been increasingly represented both as students in higher education and as leaders in the workplace. Saudi Arabia has changed its policies to prepare women to serve as leaders in higher education. Despite considerable gains that the Saudi government has made in developing these policies, Saudi women continue to experience gender and culture-based barriers to leadership positions in higher education. In this study, I make recommendations for how women can attain more equity in leadership positions. Findings from this study demonstrated that women continue to face barriers to leadership, including gender bias and expectations that they continue to maintain traditional roles. At the same time, the participants in this study drew strength and support from their religious faith, from their husbands, and from shifts in government policy meant to improve equity for women in Saudi Arabia. The findings from this study suggest that it may be worthwhile to not only highlight the barriers that need to be overcome, but to develop the sources of strength and support that allow women to overcome those barriers.
