A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Factors That Influence High School Females to Pursue Mathematics Careers
Katherine Maxwell
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This qualitative descriptive study addressed how female college students describe the factors from high school that contributed to their personal motivation and decision-making to pursue a mathematics career. The conceptual framework for this study focused on McTighe and Wiggins' UbD model using the three stages and seven key tenets of curriculum design. The implementation of UbD through this study has offered teachers suggestions for differentiated instruction, provided high school role models, and offered career promotional events designed to provide female students experiences in high school to assist their decision-making process in pursuing a degree in mathematics. The sample included 10 female undergraduate students for one-on-one interviews and the same group of five to seven female undergraduate students from the sample for the focus group. The data was collected from two different sources: individual interviews and a focus group. There were two themes: (1) Female college students described factors from high school that contributed to their personal motivation to pursue a mathematics career and (2) Female college students described factors from high school that contributed to their decision-making to pursue a mathematics career.
