In 2010, I embarked on a study which involved an investigation of the antecedents of adolescents' intentions to take drugs, fight and steal, using an elicitation study. The aim of the study was to understand and describe adolescents' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, moral norms and negative affect associated with these offences in order to create a questionnaire that would measure these antecedents. To avoid participant incrimination, the elicitation study was undertaken using simple vignettes and third-person discussions. Interviews with 24 males and females, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, offenders and non-offenders, found that rich and in-depth information was possible and that this method did not compromise data collection.
