Conducting Design-Based Research on Web-Enhanced Learning in Cambodia. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Sidonie Pors
Sage Research Methods Cases
This research project case is a recount of my personal experience in conducting a study on web-enhanced learning within Cambodian higher education. The research forms the basis of my PhD in Education, and the aim of the study is to examine the application of web-based technologies to support teaching and learning practices by using design-based research approach. The term 'design-based research' is often used interchangeably with 'design experiment', 'design research', and 'formative research' to denote a type of participatory research methodology aiming to connect theories with real practices through iterative design interventions. The literature of design-based research methodology and research studies that employ this methodology are very scarce, which make designing and conducting design-based research challenging especially for new researchers. In this research case, I explore the use of various data collection methods including needs analysis survey, online observation, focus group discussion, field journal, and reflection interview, and how they fit into the design-based research framework. I will also discuss some practical issues I encountered during my 8-month fieldwork in Cambodia and lessons learned from conducting design-based research in the context of developing countries.
