ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of male and female coaches, athletic administrators, and compliance team members at a single NCAA institution. A qualitative study design was used to examine the perceptions of the athletic leaders in the implementation of Title IX compliance measures that have resulted in the continued lack of women in athletic leadership positions. Social constructivist theory (SCT) served as the theoretical framework for this study. Ten athletic leaders at a single institution participated in the study to examine the perceptions of athletic leaders into the driving forces behind the continued lack of female coaches and administrators in athletics. Data were gathered from interviews, national data from NCES, EADA, NCAA, conference and institutional data from postings and athletic manuals for sports and Title IX were gathered for analysis. The findings from the three research questions are gender role perceptions and a lack of balance between work requirements and family time negatively affect women participating in athletic leadership positions. The love of the game and working with student-athletes are positive influences to pursue athletic leadership positions. Athletic leadership opportunities for women are growing and mentorship is occurring. The continued need to showcase women in athletics and promotion of opportunities for women to advance into athletic leadership positions at all levels of competition persists.
