Using Autoethnography to Study Disaster Response: The Impact of Hurricane Katrina. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 1
Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell
Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study presents an autoethnographic account of the response to Hurricane Katrina on the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The parish-wide school system received a significant number of displaced students and families after the storm when thousands evacuated to Baton Rouge. The purpose of this study was twofold: to examine how East Baton Rouge Parish School System systematically dealt with an influx of over 7,000 displaced children and to investigate how I responded as an upper-level district administrator in a tumultuous, unpredictable environment. No procedures, no established protocols, and no guidelines existed for a disaster of this magnitude wherein a school system took in such a significant number of students. While historically other hurricanes had impacted less significant segments of impacted populations temporarily, for many, Katrina's impact was overwhelmingly permanent.
