Sage Research Methods Cases
This case discusses the importance of pilot studies within business research. It covers the procedures, evaluation, and lessons learned from conducting a pilot study for an upcoming product launch. The intended product launch was the Edstutia Instructor Certification in Immersive Technologies (EICIT) pilot program. The program focused on extended reality (XR) with 15 enrolled participants from both industry and academia. Given that our research area of XR was a new application within learning, we chose the pilot study model for measuring (1) the ease of XR adoption and (2) the efficacy of the training received for participants. The cohort consisted of skilled individuals in tertiary education and professional training. A pre- and post-survey design helped us measure both XR adoption and XR efficacy with our corporate and academic audience. The practical lessons learned from our pilot study directly benefited the intended training product launch in the short term. The results further give guidance to setting up and implementing a pilot. Long term, the application of the pilot study method for business research will be beneficial for researchers intending to determine adoption metrics of innovative learning solutions for practitioners. Especially novice researchers will be better informed and more confident in using the pilot study as a method for data collection and prepared to address any weaknesses associated with the pilot method.
