Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help among Asian International Students: Acculturation and Loss of Face

ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
Research has suggested that Asian international students experience various stressors, such as adjustment issues relating to cultural differences, language barriers, lack of knowledge of the host culture (Zhai, 2002), loss of social support (Olivas & Li, 2006), being exposed to prejudice or discrimination in the United States (Constantine, Kindaichi, Okazaki, Gainor, and Baden, 2005) and homesickness (Ying & Liese, 1994). Despite these difficulties, Asian international students are reported to have a harder time seeking help from professional counselors (Mau & Jepsen, 1990; Zhang & Dixon, 2003). Recent studies have examined some mediating variables, such as acculturation and loss of face, which may influence Asian international students' help-seeking behavior. The present study examined the relationship of acculturation and loss of face to Asian international students' attitudes toward seeking mental health services. A total of 76 adult Asian international students completed questionnaires measuring their attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, level of acculturation to their culture of origin and European American culture, and loss of face level. Results suggested the combination of acculturation and loss of face concerns does not predict help-seeking behaviors. The results of this study were discussed in terms of the limitations and implications, and recommendations for future research were also presented.
