The Practices of Exemplary Leadership: A Collective Case Study of Charter School Leadership
Darci M. Novak
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Niagara University
Despite the large number of charter schools operating in New York State, and the number set to grow to 460, to date, little research on leadership in charter schools has been conducted. This collective case study addressed the deficiency in the literature, and explored the leadership practices and behaviors at three independent Board of Regents authorized charter schools that demonstrated high academic achievement by meeting or exceeding State determined proficiency on the 2016-2019 New York State ELA and math 3-8 assessments. Given researchers have found leadership plays an important role in school success, this research about charter school leadership has practical implications for charter leaders, authorizers, and policy makers. Kouzes and Posner's "The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership" served as the conceptual framework of the study and data about specific leadership practices and behaviors were collected to support improvement efforts of existing charter school leaders as well serve as a resource to support new charter school leaders.
