A Phenomenological Study on Former Presidents of Hispanic Serving Institution Community Colleges and Their Psychological Contracts -- Why Did They Leave?
Oscar A. Perez Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
Community college presidents are facing many challenges as they attempt to lead their organizations. Unfortunately, community college presidents are leaving the field in large numbers with over 54% of all community college presidents planning to leave within the next five years (Gagliardi, Espinosa, Turk, & Taylor, 2017). Concurrently, the supply of new community college presidents is decreasing (Duree, 2008; Harris & Ellis, 2017; Smith, 2016; Tekniepe, 2014). Additionally, current community college presidents are concerned that there are too few female and minority candidates for those vacant community college presidencies (Jaschik & Lederman, 2018). And considering community college Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) are now increasing minority presidencies it is imperative that we fully understand the reasons that presidents voluntarily leave their positions in order to extend the tenure of those minority leaders. In the current literature, the examination of issues related to the departure of community college presidents has not received representation nor dedicated study in higher education literature or research. Current literature lacks in-depth studies that focus on community college presidents at HSIs. This qualitative study researched this growing phenomenon and explored the causes surrounding the community college presidents' departure from an HSI. Using phenomenological inquiry and the organizational behavior concept of psychological contract this study helps future leaders of community colleges understand the variables surrounding a president's departure from their institution and allows stakeholders (governing boards, faculty, legislatures, and other internal and external stakeholders) to better understand the factors that resulted in a breach and/or violation of the HSI community college president's psychological contract with the organization.
