School Leaders, Personality, and Professional Learning: Using Personality to Enhance the Professional Learning Planning Process in Secondary Schools

This document reports the findings of a project completed as part of the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership program at Saint Louis University. In this team project, three doctoral candidates explored the planning process of school leaders in developing professional learning opportunities for teachers at the secondary level. The project team investigated the current state of professional learning, as well as the benefits of using personality assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), to further develop the instructional staff of a secondary school. In addition to the knowledge search, this project utilized a survey instrument to gain insight from current school leaders serving in Catholic high schools in a large Midwest archdiocese. The knowledge search, along with the results of the survey, provided the basis for the recommendations the project team formulated. These recommendations focused on creating suggestions for how and why personality should be taken into account when planning professional learning for educators. Additionally, the project team made recommendations for small adjustments that could be made to current professional learning planning processes to capitalize on the findings from this project.
